Wisdom Tooth Schaumburg, IL

From childhood to adolescence our teeth erupt in stages starting from incisors, canines, premolars, molars, and wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are the last teeth that break through the gums. There are usually four wisdom teeth in total, with one at each end of the top and bottom gums.

What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars on each side of the upper and lower end jaws. These are the final set of teeth to erupt and usually appear when a person is in their late teens or early twenties. It is called wisdom teeth because they usually come in when you're older around 17 to 21.

When wisdom teeth are healthy and properly aligned they can be a valuable asset to the mouth. But, often they are misaligned and require removal. Poor alignments of wisdom teeth can damage the adjacent teeth. Sometimes wisdom teeth can be impacted and partially erupts through the gums. This partial eruption of wisdom teeth allows bacteria to enter and cause an infection which results in pain and swelling.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need To Be Removed?

Wisdom teeth need to be removed when there are some changes in the mouth. Reasons include:

  1. Pain
  2. Gum Disease
  3. Infection or Cavities
  4. Damage to neighboring teeth
  5. Tooth decay
  6. Not enough room to brush and floss around the tooth

Our Dentist at Hoffman Estates, IL dental office providing service for the community Schaumburg, IL and the surrounding areas will examine your mouth and take an x-ray before making any decisions.

How Wisdom Teeth Are Removed?

The common treatment for Wisdom Teeth is the extraction of the teeth. These extractions are done with the help of local or general anesthesia. If the teeth have erupted through the surface of the gums, then it is removed easily. If they are impacted it will be little more complicated to remove. Regardless, these are the steps that will be followed:

  1. Selection of Sedation: Our dentist will select some sedation options which will be required during the extraction. These include nitrous oxide, oral medications, or IV sedation. Generally, IV Sedation is considered the most comfortable as you'll be unlikely to remember the procedure.
  2. Numbing and Imaging: After the selection of sedation our Oral Surgeon in Schaumburg will numb the wisdom teeth and its surrounding tissue. Later, x-rays are taken to them determine how the procedure should be carried out.
  3. Tissue and Bone Removal: Our Dentist begins the surgical part by removing any gum tissue covering the area where wisdom teeth are located. If wisdom teeth are impacted then an incision is made to access the tooth. Then the gum tissue is pushed out of the way until the tooth is visible.
  4. Loosening of Tooth and Removal: Once the impacted wisdom teeth are visible it is gently loose using various surgical instruments. Once the wisdom teeth get loosen and ready to be removed. Our Dentist Dr. Patel will use surgical instruments to fully remove the tooth.
  5. Stitches and Recovery: After completely removing the wisdom teeth our dentist may add stitches to close the area. Stitching is necessary when impacted wisdom teeth are removed. After completion of the procedure, you'll be brought out of the sedation. Our dentist will provide gauze to help blood clot in the area.

After The Surgery:

Wisdom Teeth Removal is a common dental procedure. It's important to closely follow the post-operative instruction you receive from Dr. Patel particularly during the first seven to ten days for a successful recovery. The instruction includes avoiding:

  1. Rinsing your mouth out with the liquid.
  2. Strenuous physical activity.
  3. Drinking hot liquids such as tea or soup.
